The Principal's Message

Welcome to WHES Cindy & Jade

I want to introduce and welcome two new members of the WHES staff, Cindy Allen and Jade Vafadar who are now leading our new district-wide special education Life Skills program. Cindy is the teacher in the program and has significant experience working with special needs students and Jade is the Education Technician for the program and also has a wide breadth of experience working with young learners.  This program is designed to meet the needs of a specific group of students from all RSU #12 schools who have not always had a peer group in their home schools.  At present, we have three students who are beginning in the program with more students in the wings as we slowly expand the capacity of the program.

The evolution of this program came about as RSU #12, like so many other Maine school districts, has students that require unique instructional environments away from the standard classroom that used to be met through outside agencies and programs.  So many of those options have either gone away or have extensive waiting lists therefore leaving us with a huge dilemma as we need to program appropriately for these learners.  Opening the doors to this new program provides us with an in-house resource that doesn’t have a long delay once a student is identified as requiring this level of support and the participants can access specials programming (Art, Music, P.E., Learning Commons), and other mainstream classroom programs appropriate for them.  Most importantly, these learners become a part of the fabric of this school and all its activities and services.  We are very pleased to have this new program as a part of WHES.

Grades PreK-2

Grades 3-5

Chapman (Pre-K): We have had a busy but short week in Pre-K. Our new stories this week included The Snowy Day, Minerva Louise, and Rabbits and Raindrops. We learned a lot about animals; how they prepare for the winter, their habitats, and the importance of camouflage. They took the information they learned and incorporated it into creating their own books in writing, making animals and their body coverings at the art table, and taking care of animals in dramatic play.  Have a great weekend!

Allen (Kindergarten): This week, we are learning about the diagraphs sh, ch, and th. Our sight words are look and good. In math, we are beginning addition and subtraction, and in writing, we continue to work on the formation of lowercase letters and have read lots of winter stories. It has been a long week of indoor recess, but the students enjoy playing in our classroom. Lastly, we made cornbread with Miss. Rosanna and I were able to try it, it was yummy! Have a great weekend.

Lamothe (1st Grade Science/Social Studies 1-2):    First and second grade students completed their studies of the solar system. They were very curious as to why Pluto is no longer considered one of the planets. Ask them to tell you why Pluto doesn’t fit into the category of being a planet. There is excitement when it comes to writing. We are spending time each day building on how to write 5-star sentences. We are trying to add describing words (adjectives) to our sentences. The students enjoy writing narrative stories and sharing them with their classmates. In phonics, we worked on two and three-letter blends at the beginning of words. We found we were inside most of the week at recess time due to the cold but we did lots of fun movement breaks to help keep our bodies moving!

Brewer (2nd & Math 1-2): Students need boots, coats, snow pants, hats, and mittens to be able to go on the playground or sledding. Many are forgetting and are very cold outside. Grade 2 finished up Math NWEA testing. We are working on adding ED and ING to verbs. Did you know that ED can make 3 different sounds? We continue to read every day and I am seeing a great improvement in fluency. On Fridays, we write. We started a unit on Personal Narratives. We are working on writing a beginning that will HOOK the audience.

Bouchard (3B):  Brrrr winter is definitely settling in. Please remember to send your students with proper outdoor gear so they stay warm while we are outside for 30 minutes. In the classroom this week we had our first winter NWEA test. We will finish that testing up next week. In literacy, the students worked on writing the beginning, middle, and end of the narrative story they planned last week. We also continued to practice our reading fluency! The students are getting more and more fluent and using lots of expression when they read. In math, we continued to work on subtraction strategies and finished up section B in our math unit.
Thank you to Loki’s family for sending a snack for the class this week. Please be mindful that we have snack time each day and are very limited on the amount of available extra snacks so if your child is able to bring a snack from home, they should be.

Classroom needs: Paper Towels, Tissues, and Baby Wipes.

Northrup (3N):   A BIG thank you to Mrs.Sparrow for covering my room this week while I have been out sick. Also, a BIG Thank you to my kiddos for doing what is expected!
Students practiced Dolch words in spelling, three-digit addition and subtraction strategies in math, and worked on comprehension in reading groups.
Student of the Week-Aaliyah

Trask (4):  The class has finished working with equivalent fractions.  They will start multiplying fractions next week.
Please have your child practice the basic multiplication facts.
One need for all students who will be attending the next trip to the HVNC….everyone needs a jacket, BOOTS, and a hat. If a child does not have these they will not be permitted to attend.

Perry (5):  Fifth graders started a new Social Studies unit in the regions of the U.S. this week, starting with the Northeast. We will learn about each of the 5 regions, as well as their history, climate, land, economy, natural resources, and landmarks. We will compare and contrast the regions to help us better understand the geography of the U.S. We also started a new math unit on multi-digit multiplication and division. It is very important that students are fluent with their basic multiplication facts. Extra practice at home is a great way to support your student throughout this unit.

Resource News

McCormick:   This week 7th grade is learning about the circulatory system in science.  8th grade is learning about speed and velocity.  Ask an 8th grader what the difference is.  6th grade is learning about the properties of minerals.  Ask a 6th grader what one test is that can help identify a mineral sample.

Capen: 6th graders continue to read their Percy Jackson books, this week focusing on learning about the theme!
7th graders have started the second unit in their first reading module. While we continue to read A Long Walk to Water, we have changed our focus to research and reading more nonfiction.
8th graders continue to read their literary nonfiction books, this week focusing on the author's intentional use of vocabulary to create mood. We have also been reading a bit of poetry this week!

Guimond: All grades have been finishing up their Winter NWEA Math assessments. These assessments allow students to see their growth and possible review of concepts that we are working on. Have a nice weekend.

Brann/Woodside: Students are making progress and we hope to keep the momentum going!  Please check in with your child to be certain nightly practice and homework get completed.  Thank you.

Allen: The K-2 Life Skills program got off to a great start! We would like to thank everyone for the super warm welcome we have received. Everyone came to say hello and introduce themselves, and people have been so generous in sharing materials and resources with us as needed. We are also grateful for the new jumping trampoline we received as a donation from an amazing family! The kiddos are doing a great job getting settled into their routines, and we have been very impressed with the community of students who have quickly befriended the new kiddos. If you would also like to support our program, we are always in need of ziploc bags and Lysol wipes and currently need some glue sticks. Thanks to all for all you do.

Grady/Richards:  The Whitefield Library has a great selection of books for the whole family. Enjoy a good book and stay warm! Have a wonderful weekend.

Trainor: Classes have been doing well on new projects. Hopefully we are able to have better weather next week so students can get out and move. Have a safe weekend.

Howard:  7th grade is in 10th place in the MoneyTime InterClass Competition - 8th just pulled in to 15th - this is quite an accomplishment - students had to complete 30 modules that related to real decision making about money (i.e. paychecks, savings, investing, mortgage vs. renting, insurance, etc.).  The goal of this Unit was to provide students with basic knowledge of how to handle money when they begin to earn it!
Lower grades are working on WordForce to enhance their phonemic awareness in reading.
MakerSpace classes created houses using the Junk Boxes and some used the Lego mats.
With so many cold days, having a good book to read can help pass the time, encourage your child to select a book from our collection for those times.  Have a safe weekend.

Morgan:    Musicians should use the "cold" opportunity of staying inside to do some additional practicing with their instrument. Have a nice weekend.

Simpson:       We’ve had so much fun practicing our underhand throwing skills in Pk-2 PE. The students have had multiple opportunities to throw at different targets, with second graders practicing keeping score. Next week they will get the chance to play some team games!

Lopyreva:  In German, third graders learn feminine words: eine Landkarte (a map), eine Tafel (a board), eine Tasche (a purse, a pocket), eine Tür (a door) and practice the question “Wie heißt das auf deutsch?” (What is that in German?). We will practice numbers from 1 to 10 and move on to the letters of the German alphabet learning them separately, one at a time. In French, Gr.4 and 5 students practice the words for school supplies: un cahier (a notebook), un livre (a book), une gomme (an eraser), and places at school. We will also create posters with the names of the rooms as part of our monthly projects. Schönes Wochenende/ Bon week-end (Enjoy your weekend).
